Natural Skincare – The new trend to continue? Written by theskintherapycoach
Take a look at some of the skincare products on your bathroom shelf……. Do you find some ingredients that you have no idea what they are or some that you may not even be able to pronounce? … My guess is yes!!
We all want to look 10 years younger than we are and have skin that is smooth, and glows, is wrinkle free, hydrated, acne free, pore less etc. etc.
To try and achieve this many of us look at celebrities or influencers on social media who have been airbrushed and filtered 10 times over and decide that is what we want to look like. Then we see that they are advertising a new skincare product and so automatically we link that product to their amazing looking skin and pop it in our online basket. It’s so easy!
But we often don’t even know what we are actually putting on our skin and for some reason it has not been seen as important as what we eat in order to stay healthy, until more recently.
Since our skin is our biggest organ perhaps we should be looking more at toxic and harmful chemicals that we might be using on a daily basis which are not only harmful to ourselves but also the environment.
Debra Jaliman, M.D dermatologist, and assistant professor of dermatology at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai says that some natural products might be gentler and safer for your skin. This is because a truly natural product should be devoid of chemicals like parabens (a common preservative) and phthalates (a common solvent), which can sometimes irritate sensitive or acne-prone skin. Additionally, some (but not all) natural skincare products won't contain artificial fragrances, which can also be irritating.
New awareness shift…
There is quite a bit of research to suggest that people are shifting towards an awareness of natural and organic skincare and if you walk into a cosmetics/skincare department or store you will see so many more natural and organic options available to you than 5 years ago. They may be vegan, paraben free, oxybenzone free etc.
By gaining more health knowledge and awareness about potential risks with certain toxic ingredients used in products such as deodorants, shampoo, body washes are how people’s mindsets will shift even further to using natural, nontoxic products.
People are beginning to understand that these toxic chemicals not only wash down our own bodies in the shower, but then into the rivers, seas and environment causing damage to the eco system and nature itself.
When setting up my Skin Coaching business this was a big factor for me that any skincare products that I was going to work with, use, or formulate for my own clients would be free from harmful chemicals. Face masks, body and face scrubs and cleansing body bars are all products that can be made using natural ingredients that come from nature and are kinder to our skin and our planet.
I believe we are just at the tip of the iceberg with our attitude towards using natural ingredients and with a big awareness on trying to preserve the planet for the future I feel (and hope) the Skincare industry is making a big shift.
